WHAT DOES THE COPYRIGHT SYMBOL MEAN?

Copyright Litigation Barrister Auckland

The copyright symbol © is used by manufacturers to tell the market and competitors that any products which have the symbol on them is protected by copyright. This means that the manufacturer either created or paid for the creation of design drawings and moulds (which are recognised as copyright works in New Zealand) in order to manufacture the product. Best practice is to use the symbol © followed by the name of the copyright owner and the year the design drawings and moulds were created.

Using the copyright symbol © also limits the availability of the defence of innocence in a copyright infringement situation.
